There was just a piece on 60 Minutes (if you think it is pathetic that we were watching 60 Minutes, realize that our options were either Dateline’s hard hitting piece on the top UFO sightings ever or actually reading a book. We were between a rock and a hard place) about how hard it is for the Iraqis who helped us to get into the US. The administration’s theory is that things are going to just be swell in Iraq in a matter of months, so it is silly to give these people asylum. That’s bullshit of course, but that’s not the real issue.
The Iraqis who do make it here do what immigrants to the US have been doing basically since the beginning; they’ve been moving to cities that already have a community of people from similar backgrounds. This isn’t a problem; the problem is that for these Iraqis, that city is Detroit.
